Loss of Place
: Ko Eugene

The traditional concept of 'place' symbolized the identity of the physical space to which the place belongs. However, with the development of technology and media, the immobility of the place is fading, and various cultures that occupied the place are being melted into digital and exchanged around the world. Artist Yu Jin melts the changes of the times about the identity of the place into his work based on his experiences. The new culture was both fresh and shocking for the artist who has encountered various cultures of other countries through study abroad and travel since childhood. Here, the place 'experienced in advance' through the medium caused confusion in the value of the originality of the place. Memories of this fragmented place are newly reconstructed based on the individual's background.

Grilles Deleuze viewed Simulacr as a concept that has a self-identity that creates its own space beyond the original, not just a copy to become like the original. The various landmarks shown by the artist Yu Jin-jin in his work are not dichotomous uses to distinguish between the original and the copy, but rather a mixture of place uniqueness and an expression of 'armed nature'. In particular, the lenticular used by the artist shows an ambiguous distinction between each image, and represents that there is only a difference, not superiority, between the original landmark and its Simulacr's place identity.

This exhibition begins with empathizing with a place containing various experiences of artist Yu Jin. Here, the experiences of visitors overlap, and the place finds a new identity. This will be an opportunity to breathe with the artist and find a clue to the mixed concept of the place.
